Flag of Krolevets to SVG[edit]

Article(s): uk:Кролевець, en:Krolevets

Request
I would like to ask someone to create an .svg-version of this image. This is a beautiful flag, depicting Archangel Michael as the city’s patron, and on the top and the bottom, the traditional regional ornament is presented, which is a part of cultural heritage of Ukraine.
For a consistent aesthetic, kindly make all similar objects within the ornament uniform, as they feature repetitive elements. --  Gzhegozh talk 10:15, 13 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Colour-blind-accessible alternative map[edit]

Article(s): en:Armenian genocide#International recognition and en:Armenian genocide recognition#Countries

Request
I recently tagged the file for a colour-blind accessibility problem. Please also see its associated Discussion page File talk:States recognising the Armenian Genocide.svg (the section about Colorblind friendly red and green?), where the originator of the map responded to the template — apparently considering a more accessible version of the map would not be in the interest of the majority of readers. I cannot tell whether that is true, I cannot change the file myself or make a new version, and there is no indication that further discussion between the originator and me would prove fruitful. The Description section on the file's page lists the countries. If you think a more accessible map would on balance be a good thing and are able to make a suitable new version, could you do so, please? Thank you and best wishes, --Frans Fowler (talk) 22:07, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
Hello Frans Fowler, and thank you for voicing your concern about the accessibility issue.
  1. "Hatching" an area has been traditionally a go-to option for print media since they only had black and white back then. Yet when it comes to Wikimedia Commons, we will also need to consider maintainability — how easy it is for someone to update a map. The existing format is extremely easy to change while adding patterns would involve some more cumbersome SVG manipulations.
  2. I see that you are in a dispute with the original author. The function of this Graphic Lab is not to argue for anyone on any side, so I will avoid overwriting the existing file this time. I have uploaded my experiment here instead.
  3. Two things I've changed in the aforementioned experiment: the green color is now darker, and the red color is now orange. Using a color-blind simulator like this one, I think the two colors can be reasonably distinguished.
  4. The very famous WCAG guideline for website accessibility recommends having texts as alternatives to non-text elements. As long as this map is always accompanied by legends that explain the data, it's fair game.
--Designism (talk) 03:12, 30 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
– Thank you, Designism, for your work, explanation, and advice. Your experimental version works well for me. Please leave this request open while I consult the user who made the original map. - --Frans Fowler (talk) 01:13, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Early emblems of Afghanistan[edit]

Article(s): [[]]

Request
Please correct these files showing early versions of the Afghan emblem. At that time, the emblem was not standardized, but I think it would be better to improve the following:
  1. longer and more pointed star rays
  2. the lines of the floor converge under the mihrab and the pulpit is "lower" in this perspective
  3. replace the swords and headdress called Kolah with those of King Amanullah's flag, but with one large feather instead of 6
  4. equalize the height of the roofs
  5. add three triangles at the top of the mihrab
  6. oval versions should have a slightly different arrangement of star rays, [6] [7]
sources
  1. [8], in this version there is an open book above the swords which is not repeated in other versions, i couldn't find any information about it so don't add book.
  2. [9]
  3. [10]
  4. [11]
  5. [12]
  6. [13]
  7. swords and kollah
  8. [14], this is not a factual source, but does contain good reproductions of the above

Possible Interiors of TRAPPIST-1 Exoplanets

Graph from Our World in Data[edit]

Article(s): en:Poverty in China, pt:Pobreza na China

Request

I recently found a bad JPEG screenshot of a graph from Our World in Data. I would like to replace it with a nicer SVG version. Unfortunately, Our World in Data produces SVGs that RSVG doesn't render properly. Inkscape and similar vector editing tools also doesn't understand the image, so I can't import and export it through there. Browsers like Firefox and Chrome renders it correctly, though. Could someone help edit it so the logo and all the text is placed and sized correctly in the MediaWiki previews? --Kimsey0 (talk) 15:05, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Note 2: It would be nice if the pattern sections could also be provided in some suitable format for sewing pattern data, but I'm not sure Commons supports those formats directly.
