Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)

Uploading Video Files[edit]

I'm trying to upload a video file and I'm getting a message indicating that Wikipedia does not support this file extension. I tried to upload MKV, MOV, and AVI formats. None was accepted. Anyone? Lora Gilyard (talk) 23:25, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Lora Gilyard: You can see Commons:Video and if you don't find the information you're looking for, you can ask at VP/Technical. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:12, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Lora Gilyard Short answer: You can upload WEBM. If your video is a different format, you will either have to transcode to webm or you can use video2commons, that will transcode the video to webm. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 11:19, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Looking for an image of 668 St. Cloud Road in Los Angeles[edit]

Is there a way to find common(ers?) in the LA area, specifically Bel-Air? There is an article going to DYK about 668 St. Cloud Road, the Reagan's former home. It does not have an image and I think that would be very useful! Maury Markowitz (talk) 18:50, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Is it ok to upload a photograph I took of a book & original art published Jan 1, 1921[edit]

Hello,

I own and took a photo of a book and original art created/published January 1, 1921, by Olive Roberts Barton (artist is E.R. Higgins) for her book "Nancy & Dick in Helter-Skelter-Land" I hope to use in a wikipedia article titled "Helter Skelter"

I am new to uploading a picture to Wik.

Thanks Casarachi (talk) 20:05, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Per [1], this was published in the USA. Any book published in the US before 1928 should be in the public domain there and therefore OK for uploading to Wikimedia Commons with the {{PD-US-expired}} tag. --Rosenzweig τ 20:55, 1 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload images to Wikimedia Commons with OpenRefine[edit]

I tried to upload several images to wikimedia commons using OpenRefine. I reconciled and created new items for each item, and edited schema with Target Wikibase instance as Wikimedia Commons. After I clicked 'Upload edits to Wikibase', it showed percentage completed; I also logged in my account. But I can't find uploads in my 'Uploads' or 'Contributions', neither can I find the images I uploaded with the file names. Thus I believe my upload operation did not succeed. What may be the reason? Really appreciate help of any kind! Alefang (talk) 01:28, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Categorization of images according to background objects[edit]

Would you please point me to the Commons policy re Categorization of images according to background objects which are not the main subject of the image? In the example shown below, various objects such as vehicles in the background have been categorized. Is this in line with Commons policy please? To my mind, a user looking at the images in the category "Mercedes-Benz W115" would probably not be interested in an image of a tram with an inconsequential "Mercedes-Benz W115" in the background.

GTHO (talk) 04:27, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As far as I know, there really isn't a precise policy on this. It's more of a "would it be useful to a user?" In general, the older a photo, the more likely it's OK to include minor details, because it is less likely we will have a large number of good images from the period. FWIW, I would not have added this category, but might have added a similar category for an image from 1910.- Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How do I go about replacing a jpeg with a higher-resolution png?[edit]

The image File:Zwikmachine_1885.jpg is used in 7 places on the various wikipedias. It's a low-resolution 316x500 jpeg-encoded image of the first page of an 1883 U.S. patent. I would like to replace it with the full-resolution 2320x3408 official bilevel scan of the page by the patent office. The jpeg format is unsuitable for a bilevel image. I've created a png file (which losslessly fits all 7.9 megapixels into 114 kbytes). Now what? I'd like to just use the "Upload a new version of this file" button, but it seems that's not possible because the format doesn't match the file name (should the encoding really be part of the filename?). I guess I need to create a whole new upload, and then go to all 7 places the jpeg is used and manually change them to the png? (I tried but failed to find an entry about this in the faqs.) Birdfern (talk) 21:11, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No, the encoding mismatches the original file. The filename extension is determined by the file format by default. If you try to upload a PNG version as a replacement to a JPEG file, it won't work, because the format mismatches. It doesn't make sense to look at a JPEG file that is actually a PNG file. Also, I would strongly suggest you to convert it to either PDF or DejaVu format, because that way you can retain high quality of the scan and the renderer will produce a sharper JPEG thumbnail for it. Or keep it in JPEG format. JPEG thumbnail generator works better than PNG, because the thumbnail is sharper. Polda18 D C 05:48, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Polda18 No. PNG-Thumb-Rendering on Commons works better for drawings. JPEG-Thumb-Rendering on commons is optimized for fotos. And do not enclose a single image in a PDF of DJVU these are formats for texts or multiple images, not meant for a single (not vectorized) image. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 07:15, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Right. Then it's best to simply upload it as a new file anyway and link to it via a template on the original file's description page. Polda18 D C 09:21, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Okay, I uploaded the png as a new file and added this at the end of the jpeg's description: "(See File:Matzeliger_lasting_machine_diagram.png for full-resolution image.)". Is there a particular template you had in mind that would be better for making that link? Birdfern (talk) 18:07, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading a self-made illustration[edit]

HI! I am glad to be back from a one month suspension. I would like to upload an illustration I created for writers' to use. For example, an author is putting out a book soon" Perception In Art" and used one of my prior uploads. Is this o.k. ? David S. Soriano (talk) 22:07, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@David S. Soriano: It seems to me that you would best not do this. You were blocked for uploading out-of-scope self-made works of art that had no apparent educational purpose. The fact that someone might be using one in a book does not make it educational (and hence within scope); plenty of things in books are still out of Commons' scope.
@Yann and Trade: I believe you were both a lot more involved with this issue than I was. Do you have anything to add? - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 3 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Missing permission[edit]

Hi, I am reaching out here to ask whether am I right in placing No permission since template on File:Sonia Gandhi 2019.jpg file as the permission do not indicate the permission from the author as stated on the original website: https://sansad.in/ls/privacyPolicy and look here for the original website the file publisher provided the link https://www.india.gov.in/my-government/indian-parliament/sonia-gandhi where that content was taken from the other website and as said above the other official website provided a requirement to obtain permission from the authority. There are many other such files that I have come across. But I want to make sure that I am doing right before placing the template and notifying the publisher of the files on wikimedia. Please guide me thank you. 456legend (talk) 12:27, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Kindly please ping me if you are replying my query. Thank you. 456legend (talk) 12:28, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It actually seems like the source has been improperly indicated (linking to an actual image rather than the page it has been taken from). That source may be either [2] or [3]. The latter one seems like the correct source, because the prior takes data including the picture from the latter. Privacy Policy (especially Copyright notice) clearly states that as long as it isn't used in a misleading manner, it is allowed. So copyright clearly isn't an issue here. Polda18 D C 12:44, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Polda18 Alright. Thank you for the clarification. 456legend (talk) 14:04, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

At File:Brexpiprazole.svg, I recently reverted a older version. But the current image and several of the older versions seem to have gone blank. Previously, they weren't. @Marbletan I tried deleting and undeleting the file and it didn't help. Probably a server-side caching issue. Give it a few hours and it should fix itself, ping me if it doesn't. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 13:57, 4 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @LeepKendall: By "a signed permissions form" do you mean something for VRT? Send a photo of the form to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. But normally permissions should come in the form of an email from the person granting permission, so this may or may not be acceptable. Images at proj Gutenberg "Ancient and Modern Ships"[edit]

I'm interested in uploading images from project Gutenberg's Ancient and Modern Ships, in particular, figures 13 – 20 on pages 40ff].

On the one hand, the very beginning of "Ancient and Modern Ships" starts right out with "This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with almost no restrictions whatsoever", but a bit below that, there's a parenthetical stating, "This file was produced from images generously made available by The Internet Archive", so maybe it doesn't include the images, and we'd have to try to find them at IA instead? The licensing status of the images is unclear to me.

Finally, the full Gutenberg license is at the end of the work, and also at https://gutenberg.org/policy/license.html, where the strings image and figure do not appear anywhere within it.

Bottom line: can I upload the images? Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 01:55, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Mathglot: It appears to be a reproduction of a 1906 work, with links added. The illustrations are credited on page xv: "The illustrations marked * are published by kind permission of the Committee of the Egypt Exploration Fund. Those marked † are taken from "The History of Merchant Shipping and Ancient Commerce," and were kindly lent by Messrs. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. Those marked ‡ are reproduced from "La Marine Française de 1792 à nos jours," by l'Amiral Paris." I'd make a strong guess that by now they are all in the public domain, but you will want to work out the status of those individual sources, all of them presumably publishing before 1906. Still, if some illustrator lived past 1953, they could still be copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk 03:02, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Public domain book published in 1906. In the context of the gutenberg copy, I suppose that "images made available by the IA" means that they worked from the digitized images of the pages of one of the copies available at the IA (not "images" as in only the "illustrations"). IA has a few different digitizations. Other websites also have copies. I think there's no problem getting the illustrations from any digitized copy you find to have the best quality. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:13, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, all. I'll keep this in mind, and see what's the best path, here. Mathglot (talk) 03:19, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A subcategory alphabetically sorted by given name instead of family name[edit]

For Category:Willem Barentsz, I’ve just added as a new parent category Category:Explorers of the Arctic. In that parent category page, all the subcategories are shown alphabetically sorted by the family name of the explorers (for instance, Category:William Baffin is listed under the letter B, not the letter W), except for my new item Category:Willem Barentsz, which is listed under the letter W. What has to be done to list it under the letter B? Wikipetzi (talk) 04:07, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Wikipetzi: You either need to provide a surname in the Wikidata item, or an explicit sort key in the Commons category. - Jmabel ! talk 15:31, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Deleting a self-published file...[edit]

I would like to request a deletion of a file that I have uploaded as a .TIFF file. Since uploading, I have found that a .PNG file would possibly suit better as this image was 89.7 mb after straightening. I automatically assumed that a .TIFF file was suitable for WikiCommons. I would like the file in question deleted so I can upload a new one in a .PNG format. The file in question is Cobar Mining Sign, Cobar.tiff - Or would it be suitable? As I would like to know more about the image that I uploaded. Is a .TIFF image is bad or can I upload a .PNG file of the same thing? Extra information is needed. AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 04:11, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Jmabel - I think I'll leave it as it is. The .PNG file (Around 35.8 mb) is just below half the size of the .TIF file. The only two edits for this image .PNG would have been the Shadows (35% default value using Adobe Photoshop 24.7 version) and the Straighening of the image. @IJohnKennady: These links don't seem to resolve, so I have no idea how to answer your question. If these links go directly to images, there is typically no way to tell just by looking at an image whether it is free. Uploading images with common description[edit]

Hello, I have some images of geometric tiling patterns that I wish to upload. There is some explanatory text common to each image, which I want to maintain in one place, with a link to this in each image description field, saying e.g. "For general information, see <link>". Where should I put this common explanatory text?

Also, is there any way for me to upload multiple images at once and have the "For general information, see <link>" text automatically put in each description field, without the need for me to go and add it manually to every image?

I hope it is clear what I am trying to achieve. Thanks for any help. Tai Ling (talk) 22:16, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Tai Ling: We don't usually do the "for general information, see <link>." Would it make sense to put these in a category and put the general information on the category? Failing that, possibly make a template for the common text.
  • I know there are ways to do mass uploads, but I never use them so I've got nothing. Someone else might be able to help you out on that front. What I do is use Special:Upload and just copy-paste identical text.
  • Can someone help this person out on the mass-upload front? - Jmabel ! talk 22:48, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel, @Tai Ling: What do you mean by "mass upload". The wizard can upload 150 (500) images in one go, and you can have repeated uses with the same preferences. However if you have really large numbers of files that you want to upload unsupervised, than you will need one of the upload tools that you can install locally on your computer. There are command line tools and tools with a GUI. Only you can know, what fits your needs best. If you habe the "common information" in a template: This will work with the wizard and every external tool. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm) (talk) 08:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I tried a test, and the "copy to all" feature of the upload wizard seems to be what I need. As far as the template is concerned, can anyone show me an existing template that does the same kind of thing that I want, so that I can copy this and just change the text content? Tai Ling (talk) 22:39, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Btw, it does not seem appropriate to put the common description against the category, as there could be other files in the category to which my precise explanation does not apply. Tai Ling (talk) 22:47, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • That last is fine. I was considering the case where they were all of one building, event, etc. or something else that would deserve a category of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 23:33, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • @Tai Ling: A template with no parameters is pretty trivial. You just create it in "Template" space (e.g. Template:Foo), write it as wikitext just like anywhere else, and include it on a file page by the syntax {{Foo}}. If that's still not clear, tell me here what you want the template to say and what you want it to be called. - Jmabel ! talk 23:42, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I created the template and it seems to be working fine, as required for what I want to do. Thanks for your help with this. Tai Ling (talk) 12:29, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not being allowed to edit.[edit]

I made an edit to the page 'Ben Breedlove'. He is my son and I saw incorrect info, so I edited it. I received a message (not sure who it was or what their interest was) from someone from Wiki saying I had a 'conflict of interest' and could not be neutral in my edits. If my edits are factual and backed by sources, how can that be considered to not be neutral? Can someone please advise me on this? Also, how do I reply to the 'person' that messaged me? Utilizing the Talk Page is way too complicated. FamilyMom (talk) 19:25, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This is a wrong help desk. You really need en:Wikipedia:Help desk. Ruslik (talk) 19:46, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@FamilyMom: Ruslik is right that you need to take this up on Wikipedia, not here on Wikimedia Commons, but I happen to be an administrator on both. Please read en:WP:COI. Clearly, you have a conflict of interest in editing an encyclopedia article about your own son. That doesn't mean your edits are wrong, it just means you are not the person who should be editing the article. (I haven't looked at the content of your edit, so I have no comment on that in this case.) You need to provide your sources and indicate what you want edited, but have someone else make the edit. Probably the best place to provide your sources is en:Talk:Ben Breedlove. If that is ignored then, as Ruslik suggests, you should take it up at en:Wikipedia:Help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 6 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

U.S. Election Map[edit]

Am I allowed to upload a recreation of the U.S. Election Map that is used in the 2020 Presidential Election Wiki Page, I want to create an alternate election for Mock Elections Wiki. President General Red (talk) 03:35, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @President General Red: It would really help to link to what you are talking about, rather than just describe it.
  • If you are talking about a file on Commons, you may create derivative works, as long as you follow any relevant licensing terms. The licensing terms are stated on the individual file page on Commons. Since you are vague about what file you mean (and even on what wiki!) there isn't a lot more anyone can say without making assumptions. - Jmabel ! talk 03:49, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Attribution[edit]

I see two different attributions for the "Boris Yeltsin 22 August 1991-1.jpg" photo: Attribution: Kremlin.ru or By Kremlin.ru, CC BY 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=5377922 . Which one should I use? Zeitung33+ (talk) 14:32, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Those are two licences (CC-by 3.0 and CC-by 4.0). Their attributions are the same.
By policy, you can choose either and it's your free choice. By practice, CC-by 4.0 is a later version of nominally the same licence, and would be preferred. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:51, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Zeitung33+: I'd recommend including the link, especially if you are doing this online. It's a good convenience for a user to be able to get back to the "original" and also an easy way to make sure you conform to the CC license, since the Commons page will link to that license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks very much. Zeitung33+ (talk) 19:31, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Zeitung33+: The attribution, stritctly speaking, as expressed in the 2008 communication, is: www.kremlin.ru. The mention and link to the CC license is a requirement of the license itself. So, the essential things to write when reusing the image could be, for example, something approximately like this: Photo: www.kremlin.ru, licensed CC BY 3.0. You can format it as you want, as long as the attribution and license are there. The mention of the Commons link as source is not required by the license, unless the copyright owner specifically included it in the attribution, but it can be very useful to add it if the www.kremlin.ru website does not mention the license. It allows the readers to understand the situation. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:42, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I don't know what Release rights I should choose when the photo is mine, but the thing in the photo (the railing of the bridge) is not mine. (in my country, I am allowed to take pictures of it as part of free panorama)[edit]

Hi, I don't know what Release rights I should choose when the photo is mine, but the thing in the photo (the railing of the bridge) is not mine. (in my country, I am allowed to take pictures of it as part of free panorama)

Should I choose the answer: This file is my own work or This file is not my own work? If I choose the answer This file is not my own work, what should I write in source? (mine photography?) And what should I write in author? (indicate the author of the photo or the author of the thing in the photo?)

I did not understand the help and instructions. I would very much like a definite verbal answer, please. Thank you.

btw. These are the laws of my country:

Czech Republic

The photographical reproduction of the depicted work is covered under the article §33 of the Czech Copyright Act, which states:
(1) Copyright is not infringed by anybody who records or expresses by drawing, painting, graphic art, photography or film a work permanently located on a square, in a street, in a park, on a public route or in any other public place; copyright shall likewise not be infringed by anybody who further uses a work so expressed, rendered or recorded. If possible, the name of the author (unless the work is an anonymous work) or the name of the person under whose name the work is being introduced in public, the title of the work and its location shall be indicated.
(2) The provisions of Paragraph (1) shall not apply to making a reproduction or imitation of a work of architecture in the form of erecting a building and to the reproduction and distribution of a work in the form of a three-dimensional reproduction.
See COM:CRT/Czech Republic#Freedom of panorama for more information.

You can use Template:Licensed-FOP to describe the situation. If it is a photograph that you took you chose "this file is my own work" and choose whichever free license for your photograph that you wish. You can put in the source that it is an own work, and for author, you can include both your user name and the author of the object in the photograph (if known). Abzeronow (talk) 16:10, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have long thought our (Commons') text about 'is this your work or someone else's?' could stand to be made a little clearer... I have relatedly wondered, when I use e.g. a blank shield and clipart of a lion (both hosted on Commons) to create an image of what a lion with its colours counterchanged per fess looks like, is that resulting image 'my work' or 'someone else's work'? It's both. -sche (talk) 14:48, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How to identify the representative image for a category[edit]

I've been organizing a category of street art that has multiple images for each piece by moving them to a piece category. Is there a template I could use to identify one of the images as the representative image for each category? I'd like eventually make a gallery and that would make it easier to display the best image for the piece. Thanks Carlos Fonseca (talk) 22:28, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Carlosefonseca: it's always a bit hard to answer questions like this in the abstract, and you don't give any example. If there is a corresponding Wikidata item, you can pick what you think is the most characteristic image as the image associated (in Wikidata) with that item. Everywhere you see an image in a {{Wikidate Infobox}}, that's how it gets there. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: I've seen the Wikidata Info boxes and they are probably what I want. I will look at them for this. I haven't yet because the format still feels a bit weird but I'll get some inspiration from existing items and make something that makes sense. The category I've been organizing is Category:Street art in Lisbon. Thank you for your suggestion. Carlos Fonseca (talk) 08:00, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Chart/Infographic with false information?[edit]

I cannot find anything about this anywhere, but if the infographic has both wrong and misleading information, is there a way to flag that? Not all of it wrong, but some of it sure is.

Uh, if you need to know which one it is, it’s this one. Septics (talk) 18:36, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Septics: "Wrong and misleading" can be a subjective appreciation. You could write a comment to explain your objections, using the template Template:Disputed fact in the description. It can be useful in certain rather obvious cases. Or you you can write a comment in the talk page of the file, expecially if it's complex, and optionally place a link to it in the description. But in this particular case, considering that the source is a scientific article from someone at the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, this could be a debate for experts and it could deserve more than a simple expression of disagreement. I would suggest that you first contact the author of the article and discuss that with her. There is a contact address at the end of the article. Or if the address doesn't work, it is probably possible to find how to contact her. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:04, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File tagged since Jan. 2023[edit]

This image was tagged by me as unsourced on Jan. 26, 2023. For some reason, it was included in the category "Media without a source as of 12 November 2021", that doesn't even exist. Due to this fact, the issue was not addressed by any sysop. I just found out about it, by pure chance. Can someone give it a look, please? Also, can someone tell me what did I do wrong? Thanks. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 18:57, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Kacamata: In the history of the page, it can be seen that the uploader later changed the date in the no source template. Apparently by mistake. That mistake on the date is not yours. However, why there is a no source tag may not be obvious for everybody. If the source is false, it may be more useful to use the copyvio tag, with a link to precise evidence of the copyvio, or to use a deletion request. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:51, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, @Asclepias Thanks for the answer. When I can find evidence that the image is indeed a copyvio, I tag it as a copyvio, but in this case, I couldn't find it, but the image is not "own work", so I tagged it as unsourced. It gives the uploader 7 days to fix the issue. Sometimes, the uploader can provide a proper source for the image. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 20:02, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading photos on Wikipedia[edit]

Hello, I supervise the wikipedia pages for writer, Høgni Mohr. I want to upload some photos that the author has sent me and these are photos that he owns. But I can't upload any of them, because when I try a text pops up that says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikipedia Commons...". How can I upload them? Lymohr (talk) 20:45, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Firstly, remember that Commons only accepts free works. This means that by sharing one's work on Wikimedia Commons, one grants anyone permission to use, copy, modify, and sell it without notifying one. So to share someone else's work, we need explicit permission from the copyright holder that this is okay. See Commons:Licensing for more information. Jonteemil (talk) 21:03, 8 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Lymohr You could ask the author if they want to upload the pictures themselves to Commons under a suitable license. Relativity (talk) 02:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@0mtwb9gd5wx, thanks! I wouldn't be surprised if we've got some IPv4 socks hanging out as well. It's been a long time between 2018 and 2023! Elizium23 (talk) 08:45, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've opened discussions with administrators on the Danish and Faroese Wikipedias, regarding undisclosed paid editing, and we'll need to sort out what it means with these multiple accounts, though they appear to be serially created, used, and abandoned, along with a few ranges of IPv4 ranges, they have exclusively edited the BLP on those two Wikipedias.
Should Lymohr remain in good standing, and chooses to disclose Paid Editing status, they can continue to work out the copyright ownership thing, but perhaps the articles should be deleted instead, because Nudlan/Lymohr seem to be the only ones creating and editing them, so we'll need to test the notability of this subject. Elizium23 (talk) 00:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it is paid editing, then foundation:Policy:Terms of Use#paid-contrib-disclosure applies, but there is no comparable cross-wiki rule about unpaid COI editing, and da-wiki appears to have only that and an NPOV policy, not a COI policy of its own. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you'll kindly follow the link posted above, it's clear that Nudlan was blocked for undisclosed paid editing (UPE), then disclosed such and was unblocked. If Lymohr is under the same contract as Nudlan, or is the same person, then it's paid editing, and as you say, is a cross-wiki rule that it must be disclosed, with editors abiding by certain ground rules. Thanks. Elizium23 (talk) 01:42, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:01 Variations Serieuses Op 54 Mendelssohn Mark Gasser piano Klavier live recording 2009. permission given by pianist for free public domain.ogg states in its own file name that it is within the public domain, yet § Licensing states the file is under CC BY-SA 3.0/GFDL.

Uploads pending release[edit]

I wish to upload a photograph of Vesna Goldsworthy who has a Wikipedia article. I had the foresight to inform her that the photograph would be shared on Wikimedia and of the sharing license. She determined that the photographer agreed to the sharing license. I see that you wish him to personally submit a release. Your Interactive Release Generator states that the file may be posted by someone else, but it needs the file's URL. May I submit the file(s) pending the formal release? I am sure that the photographer does not have a Wikimedia account. Sorry this is the first time I have uploaded to Wikimedia Images.Oldsilenus (talk) 16:30, 9 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Oldsilenus: the reason for the warning on the page is that it doesn't indicate a license. Do you know what license the owner of the image will issue? If so, please add that to the page and remove the "no license" notice. If not, turn the "no license" notice into a normal DR, which allows more time before the image would be deleted for lack of license. - Jmabel ! talk 17:17, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Voila! It seems to be now accepted. I assume that if I post different pixel sizes of the photo that is covered under the license, and no further authorizations are required.Oldsilenus (talk) 18:57, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Oldsilenus: there is never any reason to post different pixel sizes of the photo. Always post the highest resolution available; the software will always downsize appropriately as needed.

Form to e-mail to owner for permission[edit]

Sorry. I came across this earlier today but I am having no luck now. As stated in prior question the file File:VesnaGoldsworthy creditMartinFigura crop.jpg was added pending permission.I now need the form to verify that the permission has been obtained. The image was uploaded so that I would have a URL required by the form. Oldsilenus (talk) 02:37, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Oldsilenus: I had understood your first question as meaning that the photographer was prepared to send the permission (either with the release generator or otherwise), as soon as you inform him of the url of the uploaded file, in accordance with the procedure detailed at Commons:Volunteer Response Team#If you are NOT the copyright holder. Is that correct? If you have informed the photographer, it's now up to him to send the required permission. I had also assumed, perhaps too quickly, that you already knew which free license the photographer will use. If you do know it, you can add the corresponding license template to the file description page (for example CC-BY-SA-4.0). Anyway, if you do not know the license and if the file is deleted because it is missing the license template, it will be restored after Wikimedia receives the license permission from the photographer. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:39, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry- I found the form to send him at 12:00 AM Eastern Time. At 10:30 AM today I received word that the copyright holder e-mailed the permission to you. I have not checked if the file was deleted yet or not. I am also sorry that I had difficulty with the PP template. Oldsilenus (talk) 16:50, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

.PNG Files[edit]

I converted my .RAW image into a .JPG while when I straightened the image it required me to save in a .PNG file. Are .PNG files accepted and are they just as good as .JPG files? What is the downside for .PNG files? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 04:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The thumb-generator at commons uses an optimization on PNGs that is better suited for graphics than photos and with JPG the other way around. In principle RAW to PNG would make a better quality than JPG could. But as long as no solution for thumbs has been created at commons, thumbs of photos will look better on MW sites, if they use JPG. However you could convert your RAW images to PNG, make adjustments and than convert to lossless webp (importent: chose the lossless option in cwebp.exe) for upload. You would circumvent commons restrictions and publish a photo in best possible quality. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) ([[User talk:|talk]]) 09:01, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • C.Suthorn - I have saved an image directly from a .RAW file into a .PNG file. While looking at the details of the .PNG file that saving it as that has removed ALL the details of that image. Deleting the information when it was taken, along with deleting Camera Model, GPS details etc. The only change to the file was that it was slightly off-straight. The file size is 40.6 MB. Am I doing something wrong here for all the detail information of that file to go missing when saving as a .PNG? AdamDaleyAUS (talk) 23:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @AdamDaleyAUS: PNG format doesn't keep EXIF data. That's why it is better to use the JPEG format for pictures. Also Mediawiki improves sharpness of JPEG files. Yann (talk) 23:32, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there, I'm trying to upload an image (File:Ada_Health_Symptom_Checker_conceptual_overview.png) which is a piece of work I made and then published at a medical journal that uses Creative Commons licensing (https://humanfactors.jmir.org/2020/3/e19713/). It looks like it uploaded correctly but when I try to use on Wikipedia I get a broken image icon instead of a thumbnail. However if I click on the filename it displays properly, and I can download it and it looks just fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Hi, Clicking some of the thumbnails gives the Wikimedia servers error messge: "Error: 429, Too Many Requests at Thu, 10 Aug 2023...". It may be a temporary problem. You can probably wait to see if it gets fixed later today. However, in the meantime, please fix the description page by crediting the real authors and source and using the same license as the source. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:05, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks - I will check again tomorrow. I added the other authors (I'm one of them) and license info to the Summary. PaulWicks (talk) 15:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@PaulWicks: I had missed the fact that your Wikimedia username is identical to the name of one of the authors of the article, which explains your "own work" statement. In theory, as the author, you can use different licences at different places. But it can be confusing. On the JMIRHF copy, you used a license "BY". On the Commons copy, you used a license "BY-SA". -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That was an oops on my part, now rectified. I'm still getting a broken thumbnail however (replicated on multiple browsers). Can you (or anyone else?) let me know if I've done something wrong or whether the file needs adjusting in some way? Thanks! PaulWicks (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Transfer from Geograph[edit]

I've been trying to use https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ to transfer an image (cc-by-sa) from Geograph nothing happens and looking at the archives I see this tool hasn't worked for some years. Can it be taken down to stop others wasting their time and is there an alternative? Shantavira (talk) 15:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Shantavira: That seems like an old problem with no answer on meta. Perhaps you can try asking at Commons:Village pump/Technical. (Pinging Multichill, who might have suggestions.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

My fathers house (Erwin Friedrich Baumann (1890-1980)[edit]

After the deathe of my father in 1980 I inherited his estate. I would like to include in his Wikipedia article a fotograph of his house which he acquiered in 1938. How can I do that? HF Baumann (talk) 17:31, 10 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Convenience link: en:Erwin Friedrich Baumann
  • @HF Baumann: assuming the house still exists, the simplest thing would be to photograph it yourself and upload that. Or are you talking about a specific old photo of the house? If so, was he the photographer? If so, and if you inherited his intellectual property rights, you can use an "heirs" license" such as {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. Similarly for anything else where you inherited intellectual property rights.
  • 1938 photos are typically (though not universally) still in copyright. If the photographer was alive in 1953, then it is still copyrighted. So:
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1953 or later:
      • Only the heir to their intellectual property can grant a license.
        • If you know who that is, you can approach them and ask them to go through the COM:VRT process to grant permission.
        • If you don't know who that is you are out of luck.
    • If you know who the photographer was, and they died in 1952 or earlier:
      • The photograph is in the public domain, and you or anyone may upload it. Use {{PD-old-70}} in lieu of a license.
    • If you don't know who the photographer was, you are out of luck.
